*** COSMIC RESONANCE ***

We live in a modern world no longer guided by the planets and stars.
Most of us are guided by the artificial lights and sounds of our devices, streetlights and lamps.
Short sighted we no longer have eyes and ears for the sparkling lights, immense depth and complexity of the Universe.

Living in the small community of Daajing Giids on Haida Gwaii, we are blessed we can still find places away from streetlights to take in the lights of the stars and planets. That is, if the clouds don't obscure our vision! We live in a temperate rainforest after all

Local artists Erin Harris and Kiki van der Heiden invite you to join them at Earth Temple to learn more about their work, inspired by the movement, forms, lights and sounds of the Cosmic and Earthly Waters

*** Moving Art Installation ***

The space of Earth Temple is aligned with the four directions, West, North, East and South.
Each wall represents a section of the Cosmic sky.
The coming weeks and months, the art installation follows
the movements of planets and comets through Time and Space.

Kiki created woven (colour coded) Silk Spheres to represent the planets as they move through time and space. These spheres will dance, jump and leap through the space each week, depending on the movement of the respective planet.

Erin's pieces represent parts of the Milky Way River. She created an intricate Fibre Comet to represent the movement of the Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas, also known as 'The Great Comet' of 2024.  According to NASA, this comet made its closest transit past the Sun on September 27, 2024 and came within approximately 70 million kilometres (44 million miles) of Earth on October 12 2024. It is now getting ready to merge within the Cosmic waters of the Milky Way.

Meet the Artists:

Erin Harris

The work of Fibre Artist Erin Harris flows from years of spending time within the natural habitat of the streams, rivers and oceans in and around Haida Gwaii.

Her most recent creations were completed while she was doing fieldwork walking creeks on East Moresby Island. The long dark evening hours on the boat and some clear night skies allowed for a unique blending and infusion of energies from the waters and skies throughout her needle and fibre work.

Erin’s Fibre Artworks represent the Milky Way within the art installation at Earth Temple, and one piece represents the “Great Comet of 2024”.

Kiki van der Heiden

During the early, quiet and dark hours around the Winter Solstice of 2020, Kiki paddled her canoe daily across Bearskin Bay for early morning meditation at Earth Temple. Her artworks flow out from this inspiration and getting to know the Starry Sky.

Kiki installed Planetary Mandalas (gouache on wood) and Planetary Spheres (wool felted creations) on flowing Silk fabrics representing constellations on Friday October 11 2024, according to the position of the planets at the time of Sun Rise of that morning.

Her woven Silk Planetary Spheres change position in Earth Temple, as they track the movements of the planets the coming weeks and months.

Guest Artists:

Nora Pattison

Guest Artist Nora Pattison (10yr) contributes to the Cosmic Resonance Art Installation with a beautiful Fibre piece, which represents Non-Periodic Comet C/2024 S1 (ATLAS).

Recently this comet suddenly brightened to a magnitude of 9 and grew a gas tail. On October 26 it passed the star Spica in VIRGO.

Its closest approach to the Sun, or perihelion, was on October 28, 2024. It disintegrated on this day and sprinkled its Comet Stardust all around. Despite being disintegrated, it continues to travel through the Solar System, currently it can be found in the Raven constellation of CORVUS.

The coming months, Nora's artwork will be tracking the Comet's movements through the silky constellations along the East Wall of Earth Temple.

Ruby Pattison
Guest Artist Ruby Pattison (8yr) contributes her 'Rose Comet' to the exhibit.

This intricate fibre artwork represents Hyperbolic Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS), currently in the Milky Way Wolf constellation of LUPUS .

The story of Little Red Riding Hood comes to mind with this Rose Comet. Grandmother constellation of Norma is close by.

The Comet's closest approach to Earth happens on Tuesday January 14, 2025, when it can be found in CAPRICORN constellation which is represented with silk on the North wall of the Earth Temple.

Keep your eye out for it's movement through the Fibre Art Milky Way along the North East wall of Earth Temple!
