Chanting mantras while standing in front of a blank canvas, slowly but surely triangles appear. A mysterious process. An invisible guide shows me the way. A meditative mind, receptive to softly whispered instructions. Creating lines, forming triangles, circles, squares, rectangles and sometimes a 'Bindu' (small dot) to complete the image.
No measuring tools are invited. This geometry is crooked, off centre and alive.
Slowly but surely 'Yantras' appear on the canvas.

"Yantras are visual tools that serve either as centering devices or as symbolic compositions of the energy patterns of a deity seen by Tantric seers in their visions”. Harish Johari
The word yantra in sanskrit means tool, machine or instrument. Yantras are usually geometric diagrams, made of a small dot (bindu) surrounded by circles, triangles, and squares, each having symbolic meaning. These shapes come together to form the pattern of the divine. A yantra is also a visual form of a mantra (sacred sound) used to strengthen focus in meditation.
And so it comes full circle.

To the Temple - Light at the End of the Tunnel, Shri Yantra

A dark winter night, vertigo causing turmoil, finding solace while painting. As above, so below, as within, so without, it all emerges on the canvas.
Sitting with 'To the Temple', being with the turmoil within my body, within my ear, within the cochlea, the whirlwind, the wild range of sounds, the swirling. Maybe it's a wild Sufi dance, moving faster and faster one finds ones centre.
Lines appear, slowly forming triangles. Shri Yantra is calling, yet not knowing where to go next. Trying to make sense of it all makes me dizzy. Coming back to the chant, to trusting the whispers, guiding me, one line at a time.

Raw Wet Anger - Sitting with Anger
2018
Acrylic on Canvas, 36" x 36"
The tumultuous raw angry painting surfaced in 2018 and it's energy felt very potent and strong. A small figure sitting in the corner, feeling small and scared.
The piece was transformed by sitting with it for many days. Initially it was hard to be with the piece, I noticed I wanted to just tuck it away in a far corner, not wanting to look at it. But I kept it in the space, and through meditation and chanting, over time, it invited me back in.
This is the result of alchemy, of the transformation that occurred in the cauldron of sitting with ones emotions.
